Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums. It is an early stage of periodontal disease that can be reversed. Signs of gingivitis are bleeding when brushing, bright red gums and inflammation. The most common factor of gingivitis is plaque build-up. When plaque is not properly removed at home it causes the gums to be irritated and you will notice the signs of gingivitis appearing. Flossing and brushing properly are very important in preventing gingivitis as well as having your teeth cleaned on a regular basis. Call your dentist if you have signs of gingivitis especially if you have not had a routine dental cleaning or exam in the last 6months.

Last week I had the privilege to go to San Diego for my nephew Eriks graduation from Marine Boot Camp. It was an awesome experience and I am very, very proud of him. In one of his letters Erik explained to me that the second week he was there all the recruits went to Dental where they had exams and x-rays. A few days later he had his wisdom teeth out. The recruits have their wisdom teeth taken out so that they have no chance of having problems when they are deployed. Erik also let me know that in the mornings (4:00 a.m.) the recruits had not quite five minutes to get dressed, shave and brush their teeth. He said that they were given barely enough time to brush because things move at a million times a minute. He said that as the recruits progressed in their training they did start getting more time for hygiene. Erik said that they never brushed twice a day. I have been a dental assistant for almost twelve years and all of my nephews and nieces know that they have to brush twice a day for two minutes and floss. I am REALLY glad that Erik did not try to tell his drill instructors my recommendations because that would have got him A LOT of push ups or another form of PT.

Why is it so important to wear retainers after completing orthodontic treatment?
Teeth are surrounded by periodontal ligaments and these ligaments are made of numerous fibers running in all different directions. Teeth erupt in the most natural and relaxed position, which is often times not straight. When patients have braces, teeth are pulled and rotated in different directions, causing strain on the fibers of these ligaments. Once braces are removed and if retainers are not worn, the teeth want to shift back so the ligaments are back in their most relaxed position. If youve lost your retainer, please inquire at your next dental visit; otherwise, please keep wearing your retainers after braces and other appliances are removed. Orthodontic treatment is a lifelong commitment and we want you to maintain your happy, healthy smile here at Gentry Smiles.
Where we don’t do much orthodontic treatment at Gentry Smiles, we want to support the work of our local orthodontists and as a dental team we want what is best for our patients! So, um, yes. You do have to wear your retainers. But, only if you want your teeth to stay straight.

I have seen multiple dentist throughout my life and had NEVER liked seeing a dentist. This is the first dental office that made me feel that they understood and cared for how complex of an issue I had with my dental history. Every staff member at this office is kind and caring. You couldn’t find a better place to go for dentistry.
